Big Five (IPIP) guide
The five major personality factors.
What is the Big Five assessment?
This assessment is based on the Big Five personality model and public IPIP (International Personality Item Pool) items. It gives a broad picture of stable personality tendencies — one of psychology’s most established personality frameworks.
The five main factors
- Neuroticism (N): sensitivity to stress and emotional fluctuation
- Extraversion (E): social energy and a pull toward interaction
- Openness (O): interest in experience, ideas, and change
- Agreeableness (A): cooperation, trust, and empathy
- Conscientiousness (C): order, responsibility, and follow-through
An important note on interpretation
In the Big Five, being “high†or “low†on a factor is not good or bad by itself. What matters is understanding the combination of factors in your life, work, and relationships — and using that for self-knowledge.
How should you answer?
- Think about your overall pattern of behavior, not a single day.
- Do not give the ideal answer; give the real one.
- Do not over-analyze the items; choose your dominant sense.
The academy edition
- 50 statements from the public-domain IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers.
- Five main domains without separate facets.
- Purpose: educational self-awareness — not a clinical diagnosis and not a formal hiring certificate.
What is the “professional / official†NEO?
The commercial NEO-PI-R / NEO-FFI belongs to rights-holding publishers (such as PAR / Costa & McCrae products) and those items cannot be published here without a license. The professional edition usually includes 240 items and 30 facets (NEO-PI-R) or the shorter FFI, with standard norms and clinical/organizational reports.
A common free educational alternative is the IPIP-NEO family (for example 120 or 300 items with facets), which is public-domain but is still not a licensed commercial NEO.
Note: Academy assessment adapted for compatibility with the official version. The current edition uses public IPIP items.
